Internationally renowned band The Saw Doctors and rising stars Paddy Casey and Fionn Regan will join other leading Irish performers for live sets in Trafalgar Square and Covent Garden on Sunday 13 March, as part of London's celebrations to mark St Patrick's Day.
The Saw Doctors and Paddy Casey, who released 'Saints and Sinners' on 7 February, will take to the main stage in Trafalgar Square. Other performers will include Ronnie Drew and Mike Hanrahan, Dublin City Working Men's Band, Frances Black, Jerry Fish and the Mudbug Club and Celtic Feet.
Fionn Regan, whose 'Hotel Room' EP is released on 15 March, is due to play on the acoustic stage in Covent Garden. The second stage will also feature acclaimed singer-songwriter Mundy, as well as Jack Lukeman, the Don Mescall Band and soprano Franzita Whelan. There will also be a series of Comhaltas performers.
The St Patrick's Day Parade and Festival are being organised by the Mayor of London, supported by a wide range of London Irish community organisations led by the Council of Irish Counties Association. The event is free and is open to all. It will take place on Sunday 13 March from noon until 6pm and is one of a number of Irish themed events taking place in the capital in the run up to St Patrick's Day itself, which falls on 17 March.
Announcing plans to for the parade and festival, Mayor Ken Livingstone said:
'By celebrating St Patrick's Day, we are marking the enormous contribution that generations of Irish people have made and continue to make to the social, economic and cultural life of our city. I want to see London's St Patrick's Day celebrations grow each year to stand alongside those seen in cities like New York, Boston and Chicago. We had a fantastic day last year and there will be something for all the family again this time, with live music, traditional Irish food and crafts as well as children’s activities. I'm particularly pleased that the festival will take place in favourite London squares.'

IRISH ELDERS NOW - FILM PREMIERES AT THE TRICYCLE
Tricycle Cinema, Kilburn High Rd, London NW6
£8
I Only Came Over for a Couple of Years
(2003, producer David Kelly, 31 mins)
Interviews with elderly Irish men and women in London intercut with footage of the 2003 London St. Patrick's Day Parade. These testimonies of coming to London between the 1930s and 1960s constitute a moving and valuable record of a rapidly disappearing section of the London population.
Lost Generation
(2003, producer Paul Rouse, 55 mins)
An RTÉ documentary screened in Ireland in December 2003 but never shown in Britain. The programme which depicts the plight of elderly Irish men in Britain is a serious indictment of Irish government policy towards the Irish in Britain and after heated debates in the Dail, has resulted in a recent reassessment of the level of grant-aid to Irish welfare organisations.
Both films will be introduced by their respective producers David Kelly and Paul Rouse, along with the Director of the Irish Studies Centre, Prof. Mary Hickman.

EXHIBITION: CONQUERING ENGLAND – IRELAND IN VICTORIAN LONDON
National Portrait Gallery, St Martin's Place, London WC2
The exhibition offers a wide range of visual material from fine paintings by artists as diverse as Daniel Maclise, Ford Madox Brown and John Lavery and iconic works such as John Butler Yeats' portrait of his eldest son W.B. Yeats, to Oscar Wilde’s early draft of The Importance of Being Earnest. Equally fascinating are more everyday items: pages from popular magazines, sketches of politicians caught 'off duty', book illustrations, and theatre posters - ephemera which convey vital moments in cultural history, for example when Yeats' first performed play The Land of Heart's Desire and Shaw's first smash hit Arms and the Man were put on together at the Avenue Theatre.
